Place & story

A change of purpose

The Magazine Fort occupies the site of Phoenix Lodge in the south-east of the park. The Office of Public Works records that Sir Edward Fisher built the lodge in 1611. It was demolished in 1734 when the Duke of Dorset ordered a powder magazine for Dublin. A further wing was added in 1801 to accommodate troops. These changes show how a former residence became a place for storing military supplies and housing soldiers. [2]
