Place & story

A school in the postmaster’s cottage

Rathcoole’s school history records that the postmaster’s vacant house became a national school in 1857. James Sheil managed the school and Eliza Carroll was its first teacher. The thatched cottage combined classrooms and accommodation, but deteriorated; the school was removed from the national register in July 1874 and continued on a fee-paying basis. [2]

A purpose-built school at the Green

A new national school opened at the Green in 1886, with a roll of 150 pupils. Its cost of £459 included a government grant of £306. Black-brick crosses on the front prompted correspondence over the standard building plan. The building served as a school until 1965, when newer premises began another period of expansion. [2]

Growth and shared amenities

Resident Paddy Gavin recalled new housing estates and the Naas Road bypass transforming Rathcoole during the 1960s. In his account, Garda Jim McKeever encouraged residents to organise around young people’s recreational needs. A community centre and playing fields became major objectives. Carnivals, concerts, auctions and other fundraising helped residents assemble a deposit and secure a loan for the centre, as public grants did not cover the full cost. [3]
