Place & story
From foundation to national titles
Sarsfields identifies Bullaun, New Inn and Woodlawn as its community and dates its foundation to 1966. That sporting catchment extends beyond Bullaun electoral division. Interviewed by Philip Reid in 1998, schoolteacher and co-founder David McGann recalled the club’s beginnings under the county’s one-club-per-parish policy. Junior success in 1968 and an intermediate title in 1976 preceded its first senior county championship in 1980. All-Ireland club titles followed in 1993 and 1994. [2] [3]
Recording and commemorating the club
David McGann compiled For the Pride of the Parish, a history of Gaelic games in New Inn and Bullaun launched in 2003. The club later organised a golden-jubilee weekend in July 2016. Its published programme scheduled a memorial Mass in Bullaun church and a display of photographs and memorabilia in Bullaun Hall. These were commemorations of a modern sporting institution, with different events shared between Bullaun and neighbouring communities. [4] [5]
