Place & story
Samuel Jones’s surviving gate lodge
Ardbear Cottage is the surviving gate lodge of Ardbear House, once home to county surveyor Samuel Jones. Jones secured the contract for Alexander Nimmo's New Central Road. The architectural inventory dates the lodge to about 1840 and records unusually broad overhanging eaves, timber casement windows and a projecting porch among its distinguishing features. [2]
A nineteenth-century castle entrance
The gateway to Clifden Castle uses medieval imagery in an early nineteenth-century estate entrance. A pointed arch stands between rounded and square towers, with battlements, imitation defensive openings and carefully worked limestone details. Built for John D'Arcy, it announces the demesne through theatrical architecture, complementing the country house rather than representing a medieval fortification. [3]
The railway complex
Clifden's former station and goods shed date from 1895. Red brick, darker bands and shaped window surrounds give the station a decorative finish, while the goods shed combines stone walls with brick details. The inventory records later conversion and extension, including performance use within the former goods shed, retaining recognisable parts of the railway complex. [4]
