Place & story

A residence inside defensive walls

Pallas Castle is a Burke tower house of the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Five storeys rise inside a walled enclosure, or bawn, measuring about forty by thirty-five metres. The eastern gatehouse has two floors, with a fireplace and latrine upstairs; stone steps lead to elevated walkways along the enclosure. These domestic provisions sit alongside the projecting defences. The surviving complex therefore records both residence and protection. [2]

A dated statement of ownership

A plaque above the gatehouse entrance bears the Nugent arms. Archaeologist Christy Cunniffe records its inscribed date as 7 March 1719 and identifies the crest as a cockatrice. It supplies a dated trace of the family’s presence without requiring the whole fortified complex to be assigned to that year. [3]

Building beyond the medieval tower

Later accommodation survives beside the tower as the gable of a seventeenth-century house, rising through three storeys over a basement. In the enclosure’s northwest corner stands an eighteenth-century malt house, with a vaulted ground floor and a loft. The Office of Public Works attributes these additions to the Nugents. They show the older stronghold being incorporated into an estate with changing domestic and working buildings. [2]
