Rosie McGurran’s move west

Belfast-born artist Rosie McGurran moved to Roundstone in 2000 to research the village’s art history and that of Inishlacken. She established a gallery and the Inishlacken Project in 2001. In her own account, the first gathering that July was a day trip for a small invited group. [2] [3]

An earlier summer remembered

McGurran credits James MacIntyre’s Three Men on an Island with inspiring the project. The book recalled a summer spent on Inishlacken in 1951 with fellow painters Gerard Dillon and George Campbell. It linked the new residency with an earlier period when artists worked among the island’s resident community. [3]

Folklore & tradition

Working around midsummer

Writing in 2019, McGurran described artists returning in June to paint, draw and work in other forms. The restored schoolhouse provided shelter and occasional overnight accommodation. She also recalled seeing Saint John’s Eve bonfires across the surrounding landscape from the island: a particular contemporary observation of midsummer observance. [3]
