Place & story
The former parochial school
At the northern end of Carbury village, the former parochial school is dated by the architectural inventory to about 1930, with an extension added around 1950. It is a compact, single-storey building with three principal bays beneath a hipped slate roof. The survey records paired timber sash windows and panelled doors among its early fittings. Its survival adds a twentieth-century school building to the district’s better-known medieval monuments. [2]
Carbury House and its courtyard
Carbury House occupies a prominent corner site in the village. Built about 1800, its main two-storey front has five bays, with a lower bowed bay at one end and a lean-to addition at the other. Early sash windows, a panelled entrance door and slate roofs remain important features. An L-shaped outbuilding stands beside its courtyard, preserving the relationship between the residence and the working spaces attached to it. [3]
A cottage’s surviving stone doorway
A lower, single-storey cottage near the village’s northern end offers a different scale of domestic building. The inventory dates it to about 1800 and suggests that its five-bay front may have begun as three bays. Later extensions, reroofing and replacement windows altered its fabric, but a limestone doorway surround survived. Its position opposite the church also gives the long, low building a particular role in the village streetscape. [4]
