Place & story
An early school altered in the nineteenth century
The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates Johnstown’s Old School House, in Palmerstown, to about 1800. It suggests that the six-bay range may originally have comprised two separate buildings. Alterations around 1880 introduced diamond-leaded windows, including groups of lancet-shaped lights, beneath an overhanging slate canopy. A cast-iron lattice beam adds another decorative element. The survey also recorded internal timber shutters and a cast-iron boot scraper beside the stone-paved frontage: smaller fittings associated with the building’s daily use. [2]
