Place & story
A new school in 1949
Burnchurch National School’s own history records its move to a new building in 1949, designed by Basil Boyd Barrett. Six high south-facing windows admitted daylight, while a folding wooden partition divided the schoolroom. Parents later helped introduce indoor toilets, improved lighting and heating during the 1970s; an extension opened in 1992. [2]
A cottage at Ballymack
At Ballymack (Flood), the architectural inventory records a thatched cottage dating from around 1775. Its original walls combine rubble stone with sections of mud construction. Later wings, added around 1900 and 1925, enlarged the dwelling, while the older roof retained water-reed thatch. A separate outbuilding includes a carriage entrance and narrow ventilation openings. [3]
Layers of building at Farmley
Farmley’s present country house dates broadly to around 1850 but incorporates material from an earlier house of about 1750. A separate two-storey servants’ range also survives from the eighteenth century. The inventory associates the estate with statesman Henry Flood, whose lifetime preceded the main house’s nineteenth-century remodelling. [4]
