Place & story

From Churchyard Lane to Beechwood Park

Ballinlough’s original primary school taught boys and girls together in Churchyard Lane. St Anthony’s Boys National School opened in Beechwood Park in 1965 with ten classrooms and Jack Corkery as principal. Growing enrolment brought another building phase in 1977–78, when six classrooms and a small hall were added. Bart Whooley had become principal in 1974, between these two stages of expansion. [2]

Building through fundraising

A further programme followed Flor O’Sullivan’s appointment as principal in 1993. Fundraising supported the construction of a sports hall and six additional classrooms in 1997. Later alterations included more classrooms, a computer room and conversion of the original building’s attic. The school’s account records successive adaptations of the Beechwood Park site as its accommodation requirements changed. [2]

Finding a home for pitch and putt

Ballinlough Pitch and Putt Club was founded in 1984 after the sale of the earlier Ashgrove course for housing in 1983. Members and the local community obtained another site and cleared its rocky ground to create the new course. It subsequently hosted national competitions, including the juvenile strokeplay championship and the All Ireland Ladies Strokeplay championship. [3]
