Place & story
Old Bridge over the Nuenna
Old Bridge on Old Bridge Street carries a date of 1788. Its three elliptical arches span the Nuenna, with triangular stone cutwaters protecting the piers and cut-stone coping above the rubble walls. The architectural inventory names M. J. M. Werm as its designer. Located in Freshford Lots, the bridge preserves a substantial piece of eighteenth-century engineering beside the town’s later streets and buildings. [2]
Water power and the surrounding farmland
Lewis’s 1837 account describes the manor flour mill as particularly well supplied by the Freshford river. He placed the town within a parish whose farmland was divided almost equally between tillage and pasture, with no bog or waste recorded. Limestone was quarried locally. His account connects the mill with an agricultural hinterland, while its description of an improving farming system remains a contemporary nineteenth-century assessment. [3]
Fairs, courts and charitable institutions
Freshford’s trading calendar in 1837 included August and December fairs, with additional pig fairs in late October and early December. Lewis recorded a manor court meeting every third week to recover debts below forty shillings, and fortnightly petty sessions. A dispensary, fever hospital and society assisting bedridden poor people also served the town. These practical institutions add a picture of commerce, administration and care to its surviving ecclesiastical monuments. [3]
