Place & story

Cantwell’s Castle

Cantwell’s Castle at Sandfordscourt is a limestone tower house with a defended entrance and stairs contained within its walls. Jean Farrelly’s monument record describes a vaulted chamber, fireplaces, window seats and wall cupboards. The combination records domestic accommodation as well as defence. The stair becomes spiral higher in the tower, while part of the north-western wall has collapsed. [2]

A courtyard and a wider settlement

Fragments of the castle’s enclosing courtyard wall remain attached to the tower. Beyond it, Farrelly records field boundaries, enclosures and drainage channels extending roughly 250 metres eastwards and north-eastwards. Some earthworks have been obscured by cultivation. The archaeological site therefore extends beyond the surviving building into its former working surroundings. [3] [4]

A discovery beneath pasture

Another monument record at Sandfordscourt describes an underground stone-built structure uncovered during ploughing in April 1960. Flagstones formed its walls and roof. The record reports no visible surface remains, preserving a discovery that cannot now be identified simply by looking across the field. [5]
