Place & story

Leny church

Bunbrosna’s Church of Ireland church at Leny dates from around 1817. Its four-bay hall is joined at the western end by a square tower rising through three stages. Battlements give the tower a castellated outline above the otherwise restrained building. The architectural inventory records it as a characteristic early nineteenth-century church. Its compact hall-and-tower arrangement remains a distinct element of the village’s historic landscape. [2]

The Bunbrosna wetland

At the northwest end of nearby Lough Owel, the Bunbrosna wetland contains quaking bog, alkaline fen, wet grassland and wet woodland. These habitats change with the wetness of the ground rather than forming one uniform marsh. The National Parks and Wildlife Service records uncommon plants here, including marsh pea, marsh fern and round-leaved wintergreen. Downy birch, willow and alder occur in the wetter areas. This small part of the lakeshore contributes to the wider protected lake’s varied habitats. [3]

Sport, music and community memory

Bunbrosna’s cultural activities have long extended beyond football. Its Scór tradition includes set dancing, instrumental music and recitation; a 2026 account traces participation to 1973 and records All-Ireland successes in dancing and recitation. During the club’s125th-anniversary heritage project, volunteers gathered photographs, match programmes and recollections, recovering records of a Bunbrosna camogie team active in the 1960s. The resulting collection brings sporting and performing traditions together, preserving memories of players, musicians, dancers and the families who supported them. [4] [5]
