Place & story
A house behind the castle name
The residence catalogued as Kenmare Castle at the northern end of Hospital contains several architectural phases. The National Inventory dates the principal house to about 1780, while recording a taller northeastern block, a bow and later additions. Its entrance combines columns, ornamental side panels and a metal fanlight. Slate-covered walls and a substantial outbuilding add to the group. These surviving domestic features belong to the later house’s history; the castle name alone does not make the whole building medieval. [2]
John the Baptist Community School
John the Baptist Community School was established in 1997. Its account published by Limerick City and County Council identifies joint patronage involving the Presentation Sisters, the Catholic Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, and Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. Alongside post-primary teaching, the school describes adult education programmes serving the wider community. This records a later phase of education in Hospital, distinct from the former vocational-school building elsewhere in the town. [3]
