Place & story
James Ryan’s church
The diocesan heritage project attributes Rockhill’s church to parish priest James Ryan in 1842, replacing an earlier church on the same site. Denis Kelly oversaw renovation in 1950–51. The project records that the altar commemorates James Dunworth, his wife and their children, giving a family connection to one of the interior’s principal furnishings. [2]
Timber and marble inside
The architectural inventory describes a T-shaped church with a nave and two transepts. A king-post timber roof rises above the interior, and a timber balcony occupies the western end. Carved marble, coloured panels and columns enrich the altar and its backing. These details give the relatively simple church plan a more elaborate interior. [3]
