Place & story
An enclosure in a hollow
Excavation at Lismullin in 2007 revealed two concentric outer rings of post-holes enclosing an area eighty metres across. A smaller circle, sixteen metres across, stood centrally within them, with an entrance on the east. Radiocarbon evidence placed the enclosure in the Iron Age. The excavator suggested a ceremonial function: its position in a hollow could have allowed people on higher ground to watch activities inside. [2]
Later occupation
The same site preserved evidence from several periods, including cereal-drying kilns and a two-chambered souterrain. A chamber roof incorporated a decorated kerbstone reused from a passage tomb. These later features show how older material could enter new structures in a landscape repeatedly occupied and altered. [2]
