Place & story
A clinic within the hotel
Corlat, within Sheskin electoral division, is the setting of the Sliabh Beagh community hotel. Reporting in May 2005, Seán Mac Connell recorded a doctor’s surgery inside the complex, with a weekly dispensary clinic. The arrangement placed a practical local service alongside accommodation, dining and meeting rooms. It documents the building’s community role at that date. [2]
A monthly gathering for young people
Director John Moyna told the same reporter that the hotel held an alcohol-free junior disco once a month, with supervision and buses bringing young people from the surrounding area. This account records an organised social activity in a rural border district, rather than merely describing the hotel as a tourist destination. [2]
Remembering the closed roads
Mary Mullen, another director, recalled the isolation caused by border-road closures during the Troubles. Her account connected the project with the community’s experience of declining access and empty houses. It is a participant’s explanation of the enterprise’s purpose, rather than an independent measurement of its effects on migration. [2]
