Place & story

From Cannakill to a community centre

Scoil Bhríde's history traces formal schooling in the district to Cannakill, where a school opened in August 1835. Its first teacher, Mr Dunne, had previously taught at High Gate. A later school building became a teacher's house when its successor opened. That successor survives in a different community role as Croghan Community Centre. [2]

A new school in 1963

The present Scoil Bhríde was built in 1963, with Master Fennesey, Mrs Clarke and Mrs Egan among its first teachers. Expansion in 2009 brought an assembly hall, infant classroom, learning-support room and other facilities. The school's own account records the transition from earlier local buildings to premises repeatedly adapted for changing educational needs. [2]

The discovery at Croghan Demesne

Monitoring ahead of a proposed horse arena in December 1997 uncovered human remains at Croghan Demesne. Archaeologist Dominic Delany recorded two possible burials, five skulls and disarticulated bone. Work stopped, the remains were protected and the site reinstated. The arena moved to an adjoining field. Delany suggested that the discovery might belong to an early Christian burial ground; that interpretation remains tentative. [3]
