People & connections

A club crossing parish boundaries

Michael Glaveys GAA’s own history dates its formation to January 1956 in Gorthaganny, led by Peadar Earley. Ballinlough was among the communities it served. The original catchment extended across Kiltullagh and Loughglynn parishes; it was wider than Ballinlough electoral division. The club identifies Dermot Earley among its distinguished players, linking a prominent football family with this community institution. [2]

Championships and a memorial park

The club records its first title as the county under-fifteen championship in 1963. Intermediate league victories followed in 1970, 1971 and 1972, alongside championship wins in 1970 and 1972. Peadar Earley Memorial Park officially opened on 18 May 1986. The club’s account thus connects its founder’s name with the development of a lasting sporting home. [2]

Names on a village monument

A memorial in Ballinlough names Patrick Glynn, Michael Glavey and Michael Keane. Its inscription commemorates their deaths during the attack on the local RIC barracks, giving the date as 14 September 1920. It also records support through public subscription and assistance from America. William Fischer Jr photographed and transcribed the monument in 2009, documenting both its English and Irish faces.
