Place & story

Opening the school in 1879

A history published for Redwood National School’s 2014 anniversary records a letter from James Meagher announcing the school’s opening on 8 September 1879. It occupied part of Redwood House beside the castle, offered by Henry Trench. Winifrid Carroll, previously an assistant teacher in Lorrha, became its teacher. An inspection the following month found thirty-five children present and forty-two on the rolls. [2]
