Place & story
A house in the valuation records
The University of Galway’s Landed Estates survey records William Ryan at Ballymackeogh in 1814 and his son, also William, in 1837. The Ordnance Survey Name Books instead named Mr Hawkshaw as resident in 1840. At Griffith’s Valuation, William Ryan owned the property outright and its buildings were valued at £31. The Ryans remained there into the early twentieth century. [2]
The wider estate
In the 1870s William Ryan of Ballymackeogh owned 1,352 acres in County Tipperary. This figure describes his county estate rather than the house grounds alone. The university survey identifies archival material on the family, including eighteenth-century legal papers and a nineteenth-century genealogical report. [3]
