Place & story
From Carrigatoher to a new playing field
The club history printed in the 1976 North Tipperary final programme names Pat Conway and Mick Hogan of Newtown among the players on the Burgess and Youghal parish team that competed as Carrigatoher in 1887. It records their narrow championship-final defeat, 1–2 to 1–1, by North Tipperary. A later section documents Burgess’s purchase of a playing field in 1975 for £10,500. The account links Newtown’s players with a parish sporting history extending well beyond the village. [2]
