Place & story

A church from the 1840s

Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church dates from about 1845. Its cross-shaped plan, porches and pointed windows mark the western end of Cullen village. Inside, the architectural survey records an exposed timber roof, a carved gallery and marble altar furnishings. The contrast between rough pebbledash and smooth rendered details gives the exterior much of its character without an elaborate stone façade. [2]

A surviving thatched house

A house in Cullen records another building tradition of the nineteenth-century district. Dated to about 1860, it has a lobby-entry plan, an attic and a reed-thatched roof. A windbreak protects the entrance, while a small sash window survives in the west gable. The inventory identifies these features as important survivals of vernacular building, despite replacement windows and doors elsewhere. [3]

Craftsmanship at the crossroads

In Cloonmanagh, the public house recorded as D. Quinlan’s was built around 1915. Its corner position is emphasised by curved render arches and decorative lettering. The 2005 survey also documented a notably elaborate timber interior: a panelled counter, shelving with small columns, and a boarded ceiling with moulded ribs and a central boss. Its craftsmanship extends well beyond the street frontage. [4]
