Place & story
Salterbridge House
The present Salterbridge House was built in 1849 for Richard Chearnley around an earlier eighteenth-century residence. Its U-shaped plan has a projecting central porch and recessed end bays. Limestone dressings, grouped windows and ornamental timber brackets beneath the eaves give the exterior its elaborate character. Interior woodwork and plaster decoration preserve further phases of improvement. [2]
A lodge enlarged
Another surviving part of the estate is a gate lodge already present by 1841. Originally three bays wide, it was extended before 1904 to form a five-bay building. Changes in the masonry reveal its enlargement. Sandstone surrounds mark the doorway and windows, while a steep hipped roof completes the compact composition. [3]
