Place & story
Colligan Lodge and Master McGrath
Waterford County Museum identifies Colligan Lodge as a shooting lodge built by the McGuire family of Clonea. James Galwey, associated with breeding the celebrated greyhound Master McGrath, came to live there in the 1860s. A photograph from around 1910 preserves the house's appearance before its dismantling in the 1940s. [2]
Furniture made at the technical school
A second museum record documents Colligan Lodge's educational use. Edmund Keohan's photograph dated 29 January 1926 shows teachers and students with furniture made at Colligan Technical School. The catalogue lists a cot, dresser, bench, wardrobes and washstands among their work. The image records practical training within a building previously used as a country residence. [3]
The Colligan Cup’s prediction system
The Colligan Cup turned woodland running into a test of judgement as well as fitness. West Waterford Athletic Club credits Victor Mullins with devising its handicap system. Runners start according to their predicted times as a clock counts backwards; the winner is first across the line after zero. Watches are prohibited, giving accurate pacing a central role in the event. [4]
