Place & story
An altered lakeside house
Ballinlough Castle’s battlements and round turrets give a fortified appearance to a house altered over several periods. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage identifies substantial improvements around 1790 and attributes their design to Thomas Wogan Browne on stylistic grounds. Its galleried hall, joinery, chimneypieces and plasterwork preserve the ambitions of those alterations. The inventory also questions the early date inscribed on the façade, rather than treating that inscription as conclusive evidence of construction. [2]
From O’Reilly to Nugent
The family’s own history explains that Sir Hugh O’Reilly adopted the Nugent surname in 1812 to receive an inheritance. It also identifies Margaret, his sister, as the connection with Malahide Castle. The matching architectural associations therefore sit within a documented family relationship, although the attribution of Ballinlough’s remodelling remains qualified. [3]
Saving the dining-room plasterwork
A condition survey in 2004 identified a leaning north tower, leaking roofs and damaged interiors. The Irish Georgian Society records a €3,000 grant towards repairing the dining room. Cracked ceiling and cornice plaster were repaired, with stainless-steel wiring supporting the replacement work. This documented conservation campaign added another phase to the castle’s much longer history of alteration. [4]
