Place & story

Lowry’s property at Belmore Place

Robert W. Lowry held Belmore Place outright at Griffith's Valuation in the early 1850s, when the property was valued at £16. The University of Galway's record reports an earlier sale by Netterville Blake to Lowry in 1832. Although the house appeared on successive Ordnance Survey maps, it was demolished during the twentieth century. [2]

The farm courtyard survives

The farm buildings associated with Belmore Place date to around 1850. Single- and two-storey ranges enclose a courtyard, with limestone walls contrasted by red-brick detailing around doors and windows. Circular upper windows and timber sash windows survive among the practical farm openings. The inventory recorded the complex as still in use in 2004, after the main house had disappeared. [3]

A domestic building becomes a Garda station

A two-storey house near Ballymore's western end served as a Garda station from about 1928 until 1990. The building itself is older, dating to around 1860. Its symmetrical front, sash windows and slate roof preserve its domestic origins. The architectural inventory recorded it as derelict in 2004, documenting another change in the use of a local building. [4]
