Place & story
A house named for Barbara
William Smyth built Barbavilla House around 1730 and named it for his wife, Barbara Ingoldsby. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records a substantial early eighteenth-century house whose original classical details survive beneath later changes. Its nine-bay front rises over a basement, with a double-pile arrangement behind. [2]
Alteration and later ownership
A major rebuilding around 1790 introduced projecting gabled sections at the ends of the house. A two-storey entrance porch followed around 1900. The University of Galway’s estate account records the Smyths’ sale of Barbavilla in 1955. By the architectural survey of 2004, the house was used as offices associated with a factory, and industrial buildings occupied much of the surrounding grounds. [2] [3]
