Place & story
An estuary service building
Arthurstown Coastguard Station, in Kilhile townland, was built in 1898. The architectural inventory describes an eleven-bay, two-storey building on an L-shaped plan, with an advanced end bay and a single-storey gabled porch. Slate roofs, brick chimney stacks and surviving cast-iron rainwater fittings form part of its recorded fabric. The station was occupied in 1911 but disused by 1922. Its later history included hostel use; the inventory records closure in 2004. These dates trace changing uses of a substantial coastal service building. [2]
