Place & story
A clash before Oulart Hill
The Harrow lies in Ballycarrigeen Upper and Lower, both within the electoral division. The county council’s M11 heritage assessment identifies it as the scene of an early clash in the 1798 rebellion. Father John Murphy’s insurgents ambushed a Camolin yeomanry party here before the Battle of Oulart Hill, and Lieutenant Thomas Bookey was killed. [2] [3]
Remembering the first encounter
A photographic inventory of 1798 memorials records a village monument dated 1938 and a bicentenary marker dated 1998. It also records a separate memorial at Bookey’s Stream, identifying the place where the lieutenant died. These roadside commemorations connect the larger story of the rebellion with a named village and a local watercourse. [4]
