Place & story
Housing and boats at the waterfront
The former coastguard station on Marine Terrace, in Rathdown Lower, was built around 1875 as a terrace of eight dwellings. Its northeastern end rises into a three-stage square tower with projecting upper windows. Slate roofs, brick chimneys and pointed window heads give the row a shared architectural character. Two separate boathouses stand to its east, each with a broad arched doorway. The 2004 architectural survey recorded the complex divided between coastguard, Garda and residential uses. [2]
