Place & story
A circle of granite
The stone circle at Athgreany stands outside Hollywood village. Wicklow County Tourism describes sixteen granite stones and a separate outlying stone, with some boulders reaching about two metres in height. The circle spans roughly twenty-two metres. The county heritage office identifies it as one of the Bronze Age stone circles surviving in west Wicklow. [2] [3]
The piper and the dancers
Archaeologist Chris Corlett records a local tradition that the circle’s stones were dancers transformed into stone while dancing to a piper’s music. Wicklow County Tourism’s version connects their punishment with breaking the Sabbath and identifies the outlying stone with the piper. This is folklore attached to the monument, rather than evidence explaining its prehistoric construction. [3] [2]
