Place & story

A church built in 1834

Samuel Lewis recorded a new Kilbride parish church near Arklow, erected in 1834 at the Earl of Wicklow’s expense. He described its square tower with battlements and pinnacles. His account distinguishes this building from the old church ruins on the hill overlooking Arklow and its bridge. [2]

Support for younger pupils

In the same parish, the Earl and Countess of Wicklow supported separate boys’ and girls’ parochial schools. Lewis also recorded two infant schools, one supported by the Countess and the other by the incumbent, the Reverend M. J. Mayers, alongside a Sunday school. [2]
