Place & story

Two sides of a crossing

Lewis describes Ballyshannon at the Erne’s mouth, divided by the river and linked by a fourteen-arched bridge. The southern part was called the Purt. The town lay chiefly in Kilbarron parish but partly in Innismacsaint, a distinction reflected in his separate population figures. An old address using Purt is therefore useful evidence of location, not merely a decorative alternative spelling for the entire town. [2]

A strategic river mouth

The historical account recalls the unsuccessful English siege of 1597 and the difficulties of retreat across the Erne. Later sections turn to harbour access, river falls and inland connections through Lough Erne. Read together, they show why the same geography mattered to both soldiers and merchants. A crossing that constrained an army could also channel ordinary travel and trade, although the practical conditions changed with bridges, navigation works and the season. [2]

People & connections

William Allingham and the Erne

William Allingham was born in Ballyshannon in 1824. He left school at fourteen to work in the bank where his father was manager, before entering the customs service in 1846. His work took him to other ports, while his correspondence and visits connected him with the Victorian literary world. University College Cork’s chronology records that he collected folk-song and ballad words during his travels as well as composing his own verse. [3]

Ballyshannon remained a recurring subject for Allingham’s imagination. Donegal County Library records his friendships with Tennyson, Carlyle and the Brownings and the return of his ashes to nearby Mullinashee after his death in 1889. His authored poem The Fairies became one of his best-known works. [4]
