Place & story
A surname preserved in the landscape
The Placenames Database records Dallyhaysy as Dál Uí Chathasaigh. In his study of Irish place-names formed from surnames, Brian Ó Doibhlin discusses this particular name as a possible reference to the Casey kindred. He cautiously interprets the full name as referring to Casey’s tribe, and suggests that this would make it an early formation. That is a scholarly interpretation of the name, rather than evidence for a securely dated foundation of the settlement. [2] [3]
A meeting on the road to Naul
On 26 July 1914, a column of 150 Volunteers set out from Balbriggan for a recruiting meeting at Naul, accompanied by St Patrick’s brass band. Near Dalahasey, as the place is spelt in Peter Francis Whearity’s study, eighty more Volunteers joined from a side road. Whearity suggests, without treating it as certain, that these men came from Balrothery. The march continued towards a gathering that also drew contingents from County Meath. [4]
A small rural cluster
Fingal’s 2023–2029 Development Plan includes Dallyhaysy among its designated rural clusters in the Balbriggan area. This classification distinguishes the settlement from the council’s larger rural villages. Its planning objective provides for limited infill housing to meet local needs while retaining the cluster’s rural character, with particular attention to the layout and design of new houses. [5]
