Place & story

A marsh and a river island

Lewis’s 1837 entry connects the old names Corcach and Corcach-Bascoin with marshy ground beside the navigable Lee. He distinguishes an early settlement around the cathedral and Gill Abbey from the island formed by the river’s branches. That distinction gives the name a physical setting while resisting the idea that the whole city began at a single point. Religious, commercial and defended urban spaces accumulated in different locations. [2]

People & connections

Nano Nagle’s schools and lantern

Nano Nagle moved to Cork city in the 1750s and began a school for poor girls near Cove Lane, now Douglas Street. Nano Nagle Place describes how her work expanded to seven schools for girls and boys within a decade. She visited the city’s poor after dark with a lantern, giving rise to the remembered title ‘Lady of the Lantern’. In 1775 she founded the first Presentation convent, establishing a lasting educational legacy from this part of the city. [3] [4]

The city centre burned

On the night of 11–12 December 1920, British forces set fire to Cork’s commercial and civic centre. Patrick’s Street suffered extensive destruction, while City Hall and the adjoining Carnegie Library were gutted. Cork Public Museum identifies K Company of the Auxiliary Division, based in Victoria Barracks, with the attack. The loss was therefore institutional as well as commercial: municipal buildings and a library disappeared alongside shops and workplaces. The later rebuilt centre carries this history beneath its familiar streetscape. It belongs to the War of Independence, distinct from the medieval attacks and rebuilding discussed in older histories.
