Place & story
The date above the doorway
Buncrana Castle is an early country house, distinct from the nearby O'Doherty keep. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records the date 1718 on its doorway and associates the building or remodelling with George Vaughan. Its nine-bay facade, raised basement, projecting end pavilions and stone-slate roof preserve an important early-eighteenth-century design. The inventory also allows for earlier fabric within the house.[3]

The Vaughans and the moving town
The same inventory connects George Vaughan with the re-siting of Buncrana across the Crana River around 1718. The house and bridge formed part of the town's new layout. Lewis's 1837 account attributes the rebuilding to a differently named Vaughan and gives 1717; the later building survey supplies the inscription-based date used here.[2][3]
Mills, cloth and visitors
Lewis describes a town of three principal streets and several smaller ones, with villas and bathing lodges nearby. Salmon fishing was associated with the northern river, while mills worked on the southern river. Linen, cotton and sailcloth enterprises had experienced expansion, decline and fire; new works were being erected when he wrote. Buncrana's coastal attraction therefore existed beside a changing industrial economy. Its nineteenth-century life was not confined to fishing or sea bathing.[2]

Remembering John Newton
A viewing point opened in Buncrana in 2013 commemorates John Newton's connection with Lough Swilly and the later hymn Amazing Grace. The project's own account describes interpretation based on extracts from his autobiography and a mosaic by local artist Andrew Garvey-Williams. The design combines the Greyhound, Newton's handwriting and broken chains.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
