Place & story

Sea bathing before the railway

In 1837 Samuel Lewis described Bundoran as a summer resort with accommodation for visitors and both hot and cold seawater baths. His account portrays a single street on the Ballyshannon-to-Sligo road, beside a rocky coast. A daily penny post linked it with those neighbouring towns. This is evidence of an established bathing destination almost thirty years before the arrival of the railway. It also provides a useful reminder that the resort developed through successive changes in travel, accommodation and leisure, rather than beginning with the train. [2]

The first and last trains

The first train reached Bundoran on 13 June 1866. Marc Geagan's local railway history records the last departure on 30 September 1957, ending ninety-one years of service. The line carried holidaymakers, pilgrims travelling towards Lough Derg and ordinary goods including livestock, coal and building materials. Seasonal traffic supported the Bundoran Express, while the railway company's hotel strengthened the relationship between transport and tourism. The closure followed the loss of connecting lines in Northern Ireland, leaving the short southern section without its former network. [3]

Folklore & tradition

Fairy Bridges and a private wish

The Fairy Bridges are coastal rock formations near Tullan Strand associated with stories of fairy presences. Discover Bundoran's visitor guide also records a ritual at the nearby Wishing Chair: a person sits quietly, keeps the wish private and taps the seat on leaving. This is a documented modern presentation of local tradition, not evidence that wishes are granted. The guide associates the place with earlier tourism, but the precise age and development of the wishing ritual remain uncertain; famous visitors should not automatically be assumed to have performed it.
