Markets and public services
Samuel Lewis recorded 1,789 inhabitants and 342 houses in Eyrecourt in 1837. A Saturday market and several annual fairs drew trade into the town. Quarter sessions and petty sessions met in the courthouse, while a gaol, constabulary station and dispensary supplied administrative and public services. Lewis also recorded a Catholic chapel largely funded by C. B. Martin. His description shows a market centre whose role extended beyond the households along its streets.[2]
The castle and its exported staircase
Eyrecourt Castle was built in the 1660s as a country house, despite its fortified-sounding name. John Eyre held it at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when the property was assessed at £48. An estate sale schedule of June 1854 included a lithograph of the house. The building later became ruinous, while its elaborate oak staircase travelled to the Detroit Institute of Arts. The house's history therefore survives partly on the site and partly in an architectural element preserved overseas.[3]
A building with several civic lives
The former market house on Market Street dates to about 1750. Its ground-floor arcade and pedimented central section gave trade a formal architectural setting. Later uses included courthouse, school and town hall. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage recorded it as roofless, but its limestone arches still identify a building that repeatedly changed purpose. Those successive uses make it a record of commerce, justice, education and public gathering within the same small town.[4]

William Edward Martin’s church
William Edward Martin designed Saint John's Church of Ireland church in 1867–1868 on land provided by John Eyre. Henry Stone carried out the building work. A memorial stone was laid in June 1867 and the church was consecrated on 25 September 1868. The Irish Architectural Archive records a four-bay Gothic nave and southern entrance porch. Its dated drawings and contemporary references provide a firmer chronology than assigning the whole building to a single approximate year.[5]
