Place & story
The house on Kilbush Lane
Old Kilbush House is a long, seven-bay dwelling with an attic beneath its thatched roof. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates it approximately to 1850. Its survey records later additions: a flat-roofed rear extension around 1970 and a projecting timber entrance porch around 1980. These changes show an older house being adapted for continued occupation while retaining the low profile and roof material that distinguish it. [2]
Recording the thatching craft
Fingal’s 2022 thatch survey identifies Kilbush House as one of five Rush houses then retaining early thatched roofs. It records wheaten straw, a flush bobbin ridge and bamboo fixings arranged in rows and lattice work. The survey also distinguishes the later porch and kitchen from the main building. Its detailed record preserves evidence of both roofing craft and gradual household adaptation, placing the house within the area’s surviving vernacular architecture. [3]
