Place & story
A crossroads across townland boundaries
Ballycoog’s community heritage account identifies the village crossroads as the meeting point of Ballycoog, Ballintemple and Ballykillageer townlands. St Kevin’s Church stands in Ballykillageer, although it serves the village. Built in 1816, it belonged to Arklow parish before transfer to Avoca in 1882. The boundaries help explain why buildings associated with Ballycoog appear under different townland names in historical records. [2]
From schoolhouse to community hall
The former national school opposite the church was built in 1887 on a rented site in Ballintemple. It later became the community hall. The school’s own history dates the opening of its replacement to 1968 and records the presence of Archbishop John Charles McQuaid. The change preserved the older building for shared use while moving teaching to a new site. [2] [3]
Marking two centuries of church life
The community marked St Kevin’s bicentenary in 2016 with a history book, repairs and commemorative planting. A special Mass brought together couples married in the church; one couple planted a tree in the grotto area. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin planted another in the old graveyard. The locally recorded celebrations connect the building’s history with the memories of people who used it. [4]
