Place & story
The railway connection
Maam Cross station opened in July 1895 on the Galway–Clifden branch of the Midland Great Western Railway. It served routes towards Joyce Country, Rosmuc and Carna, linking a large rural hinterland with the railway. Government assistance helped build the line as part of the Balfour railway programme. Passenger and goods traffic ended when the Clifden line closed on 27 April 1935. [2]
A hotel rebuilt
A family account published by Oughterard Heritage identifies Thomas Henry Lyons as the builder of the replacement Peacocke's Hotel in 1913–14, following a fire in 1911. His grandson Leslie Lyons cites a surviving October 1913 letter from architect and surveyor T. T. Hamilton concerning the post-office doorway and window. The account also challenges the archive photograph's nineteenth-century date, placing it in the 1950s. [3]
After the trains
The station later found an industrial use. Its restoration organisation records that buildings on one platform were demolished in the early 1960s for a seaweed factory, which operated until the early 1970s. Platforms, cattle pens and the goods store survived among the railway remains. The heritage project subsequently acquired the site with plans to restore a small working railway setting. [2]
Trading and meeting
The livestock mart remained a meeting place as well as a place to sell animals. In a 2021 interview, Bríd Burke described farmers coming to catch up with neighbours even when they had no stock to trade. She and Eoin Burke had leased the mart in 2008 and bought it in 2014. Online bidding, introduced in July 2019, added another way to participate. [4]
