Place & story

The church of 1907

Cullen’s Catholic church was built in 1907 in the Gothic Revival style. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records it as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Contrasting sandstone and limestone enliven its pointed windows and doorways, while a stone bellcote rises above the entrance gable. Inside, pointed arcades rest on polished red chert columns. The marble altar repeats the column motif, linking the sanctuary with the larger interior. [2]

From practice chanters to championship piping

Cullen Pipe Band began in 1941, with local postman and musician Micheal Rea teaching young men at Paddy Fitzgerald’s home in Mologhroe. The band’s own history recalls Dineen’s Hall as an early practice venue and uniforms first worn around 1943 on Laitiaran Day. Revived in 1971 after a quieter period, the band later won the Grade 3B World Championship in 2007 and the Grade 2 All-Ireland Championship in 2012. [3]

Con Houlihan’s fifty years as pipe major

The band’s eighty-fifth anniversary celebration on 17 October 2026 also marked Con Houlihan’s fifty years as pipe major. A community report describes his work teaching beginners and leading both community performances and competition bands. Visiting bands joined a parade through Cullen, and the evening included a tune composed by band member Kevin O’Sullivan for Houlihan’s anniversary. A practice chanter and an Irish Pipe Band Association plaque recognised his contribution. [4]
