Place & story

The railway terminus across from Killaloe

Bassett's 1889 directory places Ballina in Templeachally parish, County Tipperary, opposite Killaloe on the Shannon. The railway terminus was on the Ballina side, while letters arrived through Killaloe post office. Work to widen the river above the village had begun in 1887. [2]

People & connections

Names from an 1889 directory

The directory names bakers E. McKeogh and P. Murnane, stationmaster Patrick Grace, and John and Mary Russell at the national school. These are 1889 occupational entries, not a complete register of residents. [2]

Our Lady and Saint Lua’s church

The Catholic church on the Ballina bank is dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Lua. John Glynn's stained-glass survey for the County Clare Heritage Office dates it to 1846 and places it in Ballina and Boher parish, in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. The survey records glass by the Watson workshop of Youghal. Despite appearing in a Clare heritage survey alongside neighbouring Killaloe, the church stands in Tipperary. Its dedication and diocesan connection help distinguish it from the churches on the opposite bank. [3]
