Place & story
Lanes around the hill
Lorg Lane links Hacklow with Halverstown Cross, following the foot of the hill below Old Kilcullen. A heritage-trail feasibility study completed in 2024 identified surviving stone-wall fragments within its hedgerows and suggested that the lane preserves part of a medieval landscape arrangement. Moat Lane connects Hacklow Cross with the approach to Old Kilcullen. The report records these local names alongside the numbered roads, preserving distinctions that ordinary road signs can obscure. [2]
Reopening old connections
In February 2021 Councillor Robert Power asked how a heritage trail, including reopening Hacklow Road, could be prepared for funding. The council reported an application to investigate the deserted medieval settlement, supported by the Old Kilcullen Community Association. Residents were discussing possible reopening of old roads with landowners. This was an exploratory project: the minutes anticipated further funding once routes became clearer, rather than recording the opening of a completed trail. [3]
Mary Wright of Hacklow
Mary Wright was born at Hacklow in 1901, a daughter of tailor Terence Wright and Eliza Neill. Karel Kiely's county archival study identifies her as a member of Kilcullen Cumann na mBan before the July 1921 Truce, and names three brothers who were also activists. It also records the limits of official recognition: her Service Medal application failed because her service could not be established. She died in 1979 and was buried at Rathnew Cemetery, Kilcullen.
