Place & story
Redeveloping an industrial site
PUNCH Consulting Engineers began work on Beacon South Quarter in 2004, participating in planning, approvals and construction on a 5.2-hectare brownfield site. Its project account describes residential blocks above retail and office accommodation, with deep basements cut into granite beneath a high water table. At the height of construction, three principal contractors worked simultaneously, illustrating the scale of the transformation under way in Sandyford Industrial Estate. [2]
From launch to completion
The residential scheme launched in 2005, but the collapse of the property market interrupted its progress. The developer entered receivership in 2010, and a tarpaulin depicting a finished building covered part of the unfinished structure. Following funding for completion, construction resumed. In May 2014, The Irish Times reported that the final apartment phase, known as The Gates, had been finished, nine years after the initial launch. [3]
Imaginosity
Imaginosity opened in the central development in late August 2007 as a children’s museum devoted to learning through play. In an interview published the following January, director Orla Kennedy described a deliberately quiet opening while the organisation settled into its new building. More than 44,000 visits had nevertheless been recorded within its first months. The museum supplied a distinctive cultural use within a development otherwise associated with homes, offices and shopping. [4]
