Place & story
The church's long building history
Saint Lachtain's stands on an early medieval monastic site associated with the saint. Archaeological assessment in 2001 identified the western part of the present building as incorporating a pre-Norman stone church, dated to about the tenth or eleventh century. Its celebrated Romanesque doorway belongs to the next major phase of building. Later extensions and alterations produced the church now standing at the junction of Kilkenny Street and Newbridge Street. The layers within one building record the continued adaptation of this religious site over many centuries.[2]
People & connections
Emma Jane Brown-Clayton's village projects
A memorial inside Saint Lachtain's commemorates Emma Jane Brown-Clayton of Clashacro Cottage, who died in 1929. The heritage centre records her support for Freshford through education and housing. She provided an educational establishment, organised classes for both men and women, and built three terraces of houses in the village. Her projects also included two houses for Jubilee nurses. These specific contributions connect the memorial with places where local people learned, lived and received care, giving a human dimension to the church's collection of commemorative objects.[3]
A midwife's equipment and everyday records
The local museum opened at Ionad Lachtaín in 2019. Its displays include a medieval grave slab discovered during renovation, nineteenth-century education certificates and billheads from village businesses. In 2021 it received the Prendergast Collection, comprising objects used by Nurse Julia Prendergast in her work as a midwife in Freshford. Other additions included a cavalry button dated to about 1790 and a Famine pot. Together the collections bring working lives, local trade and community memory into the historic church setting.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
