Place & story
Carving at the Old Abbey
Clontuskert's Old Abbey was founded by Augustinian canons in the twelfth century. Its elaborate fifteenth-century doorway includes Saint Michael weighing souls, Saint Catherine with her wheel and sword, and John the Baptist wearing a camel skin. Mermaid and animal figures add to the sculpture. Archaeological reconstruction recovered other details: the rood screen bearing the name Johannes was assembled from excavated fragments, while the fallen east window was rebuilt. [2]
The canal across the parish
The Ballinasloe branch of the Grand Canal crossed the eastern part of this rural parish, roughly parallel to the River Suck. Clontuskert Heritage Group identifies the bridge remains at Lismanny and the aqueduct over the Ballinure River as surviving evidence of that transport route. Its disused channel records a former connection with Shannon Harbour through farmland now served by roads. [3]
Preserving a blacksmith’s world
At Tristaun, blacksmith Paddy Hurney worked to preserve knowledge of rural life. The parish heritage account records his commissioning of videos and construction of a replica forge and thatched cottage across the road from his smithy. These were deliberate acts of preservation by a local craft worker, intended to make the traditions and skills he knew accessible to later generations. [3]
