Place & story

A church centre at a road junction

Lewis’s 1837 survey connects Tuam’s religious history with Jarlath and the patronage of the O’Connor kings. It also describes the meeting of mail-coach roads, a stream that powered mills and a market serving the surrounding district. Nearby Gurrans Turlough supplied a particularly unusual setting for a racecourse: the ground became a lake during winter, despite an attempted drainage scheme. The town’s transport and trading life depended on a landscape that changed with the seasons. [2]

Folklore & tradition

The broken chariot wheel

The archdiocese preserves a tradition that Jarlath left his monastery at Cloonfush and travelled until a wheel of his chariot broke. The breakdown at Tuam signalled where he should establish a new church. The broken wheel consequently became an emblem of the church. This is a religious foundation legend associated with a named local journey, giving a memorable explanation for the choice of site. [3]

An ancient story in a modern bronze

Cathy Carman’s bronze sculpture in Tuam, erected in 1994, includes Jarlath’s wheel. Galway County Heritage Office identifies three motifs at its base: the crown of the twelfth-century high kings, Christ’s crown from Tuam’s High Cross, and the broken chariot wheel. The work brings the town’s royal and ecclesiastical memories into a modern communal image. Its centrepiece makes the old foundation story part of everyday public space. [4]

People & connections

Tom Murphy and the local stage

Playwright Tom Murphy’s early life in Tuam supplied memories that repeatedly entered his work. Trinity College Dublin’s exhibition draws on manuscripts, photographs and theatrical archives to trace that connection. Among the images is Murphy appearing as Christy Mahon in The Playboy of the Western World with the Tuam Little Theatre Guild. The local stage was part of the experience that preceded his later work with major theatre companies. [5]
