Place & story
The castle and its working landscape
Castleknock's medieval manor belonged to Hugh Tyrell, and the surviving earthwork is crowned by a polygonal stone keep. It was also a place of production: excavation within 400 metres of the castle uncovered a pottery kiln dating to the thirteenth or fourteenth century. Its output included cooking pots, ladles and jugs, offering evidence of everyday work beside the fortified seat. [2]
St Brigid's village church
The foundation stone of the present St Brigid's Church was laid on 20 October 1803. A £1,000 loan from the Board of First Fruits helped bring it to completion in 1810. Among its later additions is the Brook Window, made by Harry Clarke around 1928, depicting Saints Hubert, Luke and George. [3]
The Vincentian college
St Vincent's Ecclesiastical Seminary opened at Castleknock on 28 August 1835, after Fr John McCann bought land there the previous year. Philip Dowley became its first president. The college educated boys preparing for religious and secular lives, enrolling forty-seven in its first year. Its later history included a substantial change in daily life: day pupils were admitted in 1987 and the last boarders left in June 2006. [4]
